Marutyri
Social BeatsMarutyri is an eight-piece jazz fusion ensemble from the Netherlands whose debut Inner Movements earned a Dutch Edison nomination for Best Jazz Album. Their follow-up, Creation of the Invisible on Challenge Records, takes its conceptual cue from an unlikely source: the immortal jellyfish and its ability to regenerate itself through a process called symmetrization.
For bassist and keyboardist Rik van den Ouw, the metaphor runs deep - assembling an album from scattered ideas mirrors the way these creatures rebuild from fragments. The band poured all their energy into creating music they hope will outlast them, floating through the universe like the jellyfish that inspired it.
The record has drawn praise from Snarky Puppy's Michael League and Dutch jazz critics alike. Marutyri's sound is built on tight, funky brass arrangements, groove-heavy rhythm work and sparkling percussion - a well-oiled machine with plenty of soul.
Line-up: Rik van den Ouw (bass, keys), Ruud van Halder (guitar), Thijmen Oberink (keys), Maurice Slot (drums), Roy Gielesen (percussion), Dennis te Woerd (sax), Floris Windey (trumpet), Yiannis Marinos (trombone).
